Photographers Guidelines for WILDFIRE

           

We encourage chiefs, firefighters, avid readers, and amateur or professional photographers to submit what they feel are their best photographs for possible publication in WILDFIRE or Wildfire. All submissions should be clearly labeled and meet the following format-dependent requirements.

Digital: Preferred

• We accept high-resolution TIF, JPG and EPS files on CD and DVD, and we also can accept Kodak PhotoCDs. Files may be e-mailed if file size is reasonable. Larger files can be sent via FTP transfer; e-mail the art director for instructions and a password.
• JPGs should be saved at the highest-quality setting possible. TIFs may be LZW-compressed and saved with PC or Mac byte order.
• All images should be 300 dpi. Many digital cameras shoot at 72dpi and measure file size by megapixel. A typical 3.4 megapixel camera produces a 9mb uncompressed file at its highest-quality setting. The list below illustrates the maximum enlargement possible for magazine publication.
  2mb (2,000k) @ 300dpi = 3 x 2 inches
  6mb (6,000k) @ 300dpi = 5 x 3.5 inches (quarter page)
  15mb (15,000k) @ 300dpi = 8 x 5.5 inches (half page)
  27mb (27,000k) @ 300dpi = 8 x 10 inches (full page)
• Low-resolution files from camera phones or Mini-DV camcorders are acceptable in certain circumstances, such as sequences of extraordinary on-site scenes. However, the image quality is extremely poor, and acceptance will be a rare exception.
• Digital submissions are non-returnable.

Color and B&W Prints: Preferred

• All sizes of prints are accepted; glossy prints are preferred.
• Do not write on the back of prints; use Post-its or adhesive labels. Please pack between cardboard or other thick paper.
• Do not send inkjet prints or color photocopies.
• Photo-processing labs have a major impact on print quality. Chains without on-site processing should be avoided. One-hour labs vary; dedicated photo stores are significantly better than convenience store labs.
• Pack prints between cardboard or other thick paper.
• Prints are non-returnable, so please make duplicates.

Color Film and Transparencies: Accepted

• All sizes of film and transparencies are accepted; originals are preferred and should be sent with SASE for return.
• Duplicates do not reproduce well in the magazine. We will return originals as soon as possible, but we reserve the right to hold them for up to one year. Duplicates should be made for the photographer’s files.
• Label every slide with photographer name, location and date. Captions should be sent on a separate sheet.
• Insert slides into protective sleeves; do not tape slides to paper or cardboard.
• B&W film or transparencies are not accepted.
