The New South Wales Rural Fire Service began running criminal background checks on all applicants starting July 1. The check applies to people seeking employment, volunteer opportunities or transfer.
“NSW's 67,000 RFS volunteers are hard-working, dedicated men and women who give up countless hours protecting their communities,'' RFS Commissioner Phil Koperberg said. “They do physically and mentally demanding work for the people of nsw when they are at their most vulnerable, during accidents, bushfires and other emergencies.”
Koperberg said background checks will involve the use of “CrimTrac,” a national service, supported by an interviews by senior volunteers and staff. A panel of RFS delegates assess each application.
