The International Association of Wildland Fire presented its Ember Award for Excellence in Wildland Fire Science to Noel Phillip (Phil) Cheney, CSIRO Senior Principal Research Scientist (ret.), Waramanga, ACT, Australia, during its Third Fire Behavior and Fuels Conference in Spokane, Washington in October 2010.
Roger Underwood of Perth, Australia, accepted the award in Cheney's stead at the conference banquet. Underwood was a plenary speaker at the conference and is a longtime friend and colleague of Cheney's.
The Ember Award recognizes sustained excellence in wildland fire research and is intended to encourage innovation, exploration, application and dissemination of important research results. "Ember" reflects the fact that research and science often move slowly, and their benefits or impacts may not be apparent for years. Previous recipients have included Dr. Frank Albini and Dr. James Brown.
