Summit Calls for Papers

In April 1995, less than 12 months after 14 firefighters died on the South Canyon Fire in Colorado, the Forest Service Technology & Development Center in Missoula, Mont., hosted a first-of-its-kind gathering of diverse and incredibly talented folks to look at the “Human Factors in Wildland Firefighting.”

On April 25-28, 2005, the International Association of Wildland Fire will host a 10th anniversary workshop in Missoula based on the original event. The conference will look at all the progress that has been made over the past 10 years, and develop a course of action that will incorporate the concepts of the original workshop into the wildfire culture around the world well into the 21st century.

The IAWF has issued a call for papers. If interested, send a 500-word abstract to Dr. Bret Butler, bwbutler@fs.fed.us, by Nov. 1. Any questions about paper submissions can be directed to Butler at 406-329-4801.

Suggested topics for papers are:

  • Lessons learned.
  • Leadership.
  • Human factors in aviation.
  • Risk management.
  • 10 years of progress.
  • The fire culture.

To receive future announcements concerning this workshop, or to serve on a program, facilities, publicities, or papers and posters planning committee, e-mail IAWF President Dick Mangan at blackbull@bigsky.net.
