The sixth issue of the International Journal of Wildland Fire in this anniversary year has as its feature paper "Prescribed burning: how can it work to conserve the things we value?" This article reviews the effectiveness of prescribed burning in Australia and addresses two principal questions: can fuel reduction burning reduce the risk of loss of human life and economic assets posed from wildfires, and to what extent can prescribed burning be used to reduce the risk of biodiversity loss.
The following papers are in this issue:
"Influences of forest roads on the spatial pattern of wildfire boundaries," Ganapathy Narayanaraj and Michael C. Wimberly;
"Prescribed burning: how can it work to conserve the things we value?" T. D. Penman, F. J. Christie, A. N. Andersen, R. A. Bradstock, G. J. Cary, M. K. Henderson, O. Price, C. Tran, G. M. Wardle, R. J. Williams and A. York;
"Exploring three-dimensional coupled fire-atmosphere interactions downwind of wind-driven surface fires and their influence on backfires using the HIGRAD-FIRETEC model," J. L. Dupuy, R. R. Linn, V. Konovalov, F. Pimont, J. A. Vega and E. Jiménez;
"Tree mortality and snag dynamics in North American boreal tree species after a wildfire: a long-term study," Virginie A. Angers, Sylvie Gauthier, Pierre Drapeau, Karelle Jayen and Yves Bergeron;
"Factors affecting fuel break effectiveness in the control of large fires on the Los Padres National Forest, California," Alexandra D. Syphard, Jon E. Keeley and Teresa J. Brennan;
"Regional forest-fire susceptibility analysis in central Portugal using a probabilistic ratings procedure and artificial neural network weights assignment," Luca Antonio Dimuccio, Rui Ferreira, Lúcio Cunha and António Campar de Almeida;
"A simple method for field-based grassland curing assessment," Stuart A. J. Anderson, Wendy R. Anderson, Jennifer J. Hollis and Elizabeth J. Botha.
