IJWF Marks 20th Anniversary

Since 1991, the International Journal of Wildland Fire has published more than 800 articles of both a basic and applied research nature. The IJWF has covered a very wide range of wildland fire-related topics, including fire behavior, fire suppression, prescribed fire, firefighter safety, fire danger rating, fire effects, fire detection and fire history. Currently, the IJWF publishes eight issues per year, containing a total of about 90 articles.

In 2009, the IAWF Board of Directors elected to include free online access to past and present issues of the IJWF as one of the benefits associated with membership. This resource, including archival material dating back to 1991, is available to the membership through the IAWF website at www.iawfonline.org; select "Member Log-in" and then "IJWF Online."

This online access is a great resource of technical and scientific literature on wildland fire globally for those who choose to become IAWF members. The IJWF is aimed at not only the international wildland fire research community, but also at practitioners and policy-makers who have a requirement to ensure their policy and practice is informed by the latest evidence.

The second issue of the IJWF this 20th anniversary year features an examination of the literature evaluating coarse woody detritus combustion and the fire management implications.

The following papers are featured in this issue:

  • "The combustion of sound and rotten coarse woody debris: a review," Joshua C. Hyde, Alistair M.S. Smith, Roger D. Ottmar, Ernesto C. Alvarado and Penelope Morgan

  • "An optimisation modelling approach to seasonal resource allocation for planned burning," Andrew Higgins, Stuart Whitten, Alen Slijepcevic, Liam Fogarty and Luis Laredo

  • "Contemporary fire regimes in a fragmented and an unfragmented landscape: implications for vegetation structure and persistence of the fire-sensitive malleefowl," Blair C. Parsons and Carl R. Gosper

  • "Pinus halepensis regeneration after a wildfire in a semiarid environment: assessment using multitemporal Landsat images," Sergio M. Vicente-Serrano, Fernando Pérez-Cabello and Teodoro Lasanta

  • "Effects of soil burn severity on germination and initial establishment of maritime pine seedlings, under greenhouse conditions, in two contrasting experimentally burned soils," M.T. Fontúrbel, J.A. Vega, P. Pérez-Gorostiaga, C. Fernández, M. Alonso, P. Cuiñas and E. Jiménez

  • "Quantifying the fire regime distributions for severity in Yosemite National Park, California, USA," Andrea E. Thode, Jan W. van Wagtendonk, Jay D. Miller and James F. Quinn

  • "Effects of wildfire on stream temperatures in the Bitterroot River Basin, Montana," Shad K. Mahlum, Lisa A. Eby, Michael K. Young, Chris G. Clancy and Mike Jakober

  • "The effects of slope and fuel bed width on laboratory fire behaviour," J.-L. Dupuy, J. Maréchal, D. Portier and J.-C. Valette

  • "Slope effect on laboratory fire spread: contribution of radiation and convection to fuel bed preheating," J.-L. Dupuy and J. Maréchal

  • "Effects of particle fracturing and moisture content on fire behaviour in masticated fuelbeds burned in a laboratory," Jesse K. Kreye, J. Morgan Varner and Eric E. Knapp
