IAWF board member Sandra Williams received the 2011 Bronze Smokey Bear award for her co-leadership of a successful Washington DNR initiative to reduce escaped fires while reducing air pollution. This project was made possible through a Bureau of Land Management grant.

Williams, in her position as Washington DNR Wildfire Prevention program manager, and co-leader Julie Oliver, Washington Department of Ecology air quality program environmental planner, created a program in which residents can trade their burn barrels for compost bins. To date, over 770 barrels have been exchanged.

Gold, silver and bronze Smokey Bear awards are given annually by the National Association of State Foresters, the U.S. Forest Service and the National Ad Council.
