On Jan. 1, The IAWF welcomed two new members to its board of directors: Marty Alexander, Canadian Forestry Service, Sherwood Park, Alberta, Canada; and Tim Davis, U.S. Forest Service, Newbury Park, Calif. Re-elected to new terms were Tim Dolan, San Francisco, and Gavriil Xanthopoulos, Institute of Mediterranean Forest Ecosystems, Athens. Board member Bill Sommers, director of the EastFIRE Laboratory at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va., was elected vice president replacing Paul Woodward, University of Alberta, who has retired. Marc Kaib of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service also retired from the board.
On Jan. 10, the organizers of “The Fires of '88: Yellowstone and Beyond” opened the invitation to submit abstract for contributed papers and posters that address lessons learned, fire effects, large fire management, policy, research related to the fires, the use of fire as a management tool, fire safety, and other related issues. Also in January, the IAWF announced that longtime IAWF Executive Director Bill Gabbert has retired. The organization has begun a search for his replacement. Visit www.iawfonline.org for information concerning the search.
April 29-May 2: The IAWF will co-sponsor of the Third International Symposium on Fire Economics, Planning and Policy: Common Problems and Approaches to be held in Carolina, Puerto Rico. Visit www.fireeconomics.com.
Sept. 22-27: The International Association of Wildland Fire in association with the Ninth Biennial Scientific Conference on the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem will sponsor “The Fires of '88: Yellowstone and Beyond” to remember the events of the Yellowstone-area fires of 1988. The conference will be held in Jackson Hole, Wyo. These history-making fires will provide springboards for discussions and presentations about lessons learned, fire effects, large-fire management, policy, research related to the fires, the use of fire as a management tool, and many other issues.
